Lot Essay

On June 3, 1968 Andy Warhol was shot three times by Valerie Solanas, a Factory associate who had appeared in Warhol's film I, A Man. Solanas was the founding and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men). The scars on Warhol's torso are those left by the surgery performed after the assassination attempt. Solanas's story is the inspiration for the film, I Shot Andy Warhol.
