Eagle, 1844O, mint state, very nice overall, although not quite choice, still certainly among the finest known of the date, lustrous with warm olive highlights, mintmark repunched, regarding this date, Akers (Volume V, page 38) wrote, "almost all known specimens are in the very fine to extremely fine grade range and almost uncirculated and mint state examples are very rare," Winter (New Orleans Mint Gold Coins: 1839-1909, page 108) wrote, "original Mint State 1844O Eagles are exceedingly rare and I have never seen a piece which grades as such", definitely not one of the so-called 'seawater' pieces and an important opportunity for the advanced collector
