Lot Essay

A settee of this model, illustrated in Anthony Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, 1968, fig. 195 was from the collection of Mrs. Hannah Gubbay, a cousin of Sir Philip Sassoon who left her collection to the National Trust in 1968. Another settee, possibly one of this pair, is illustrated in R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev. ed., 1954, vol. III, fig. 32. A further settee of this pattern but lacking the arm arcading was advertised in The Connoisseur, May 1908.
