Lot Essay

This commode is part of a distinguished group that relate to a design of the early 1760s by William Gomm (d.1794) and some 'exceeding fine commode dressing-tables' that he supplied at that period for Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire (L. Boynton, 'Richard and William Gomm', Burlington Magazine, June 1980, fig. 33). One commode from Stoneleigh was sold at Christie's London, 5 July 1990, lot 149. Some of the commodes within the group have acanthus-volute angles rather than the more architectural fluted pilasters and these commodes can be seen as the forerunners to those supplied by Pierre Langlois to Queen Charlotte at Buckingham House (P. Thornton and W. Rieder, 'Pierre Langlois - Ebéniste', pt. III, Connoisseur, March 1972, p. 185, fig. 19).
A commode of this type featuring the same serpentine plinth base was in the collection of Francis P. Garvan and subsequently sold from Jeremy Cotton's collection at Tythrop Park, Oxfordshire, Christie's London, 26 April 1995, lot 46.
