The design of these chairs is closely related to a suite of fourteen armchairs, a pair of settees and a pair of card tables, supplied by Thomas Chippendale for the 5th Earl of Dumfries, Dumfries House, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1759 (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. I, pp. 132-133, 137, and vol. II, figs. 139, 355, and 402).
