A PAIR OF REGENCY MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS
circa 1820
Each with deep bowed padded back and seat covered in close-nailed black leather, the panelled back uprights flanked by foliate scrolls, over a reeded seatrail, on ring turned reeded tapering legs, headed by roundels, with brass caps and casters stamped B.S & P. PATENT, each with paper label inscribed in ink 0357, each stamped on the bottom of back seatrail B6357, one inscribed in pencil on the bottom of front seatrail WB (2)

Lot Essay

This 'grecian' style chair is derived from patterns published in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration of 1807. A closely related pair is illustrated in E.T.Joy, English Furniture 1800-1851, 1977, p.58. Another single chair was sold Christie's London, 13 October 1988, lot 74.
