A month after he failed to win the Republican Presidential re-nomination, Arthur makes excuses: "...I have been so overwhelmed with the business attending the last day of the [Congressional] session...that I could not until today find a moment for my private correspondence or personal affairs. I regret exceedingly that I cannot be present at your wedding [as] it would give me much pleasure. I am anxious to get away, but important matters will keep me here until the middle of next week. So I can only send you my congratulations and best wishes for your happiness, which I do with all my heart. Of course you will come with your husband, to Washington next winter and I shall be glad to see you..."
