A RARE LETTER AS PRESIDENT-ELECT, PLANNING FOR HIS INAUGURATION
Less than two weeks after his election, President-elect Garfield declines the offer of a loan for his inauguration: "Your very kind letter...came duly to hand. It was thoughtfully kind [of] you to make the tender of an advance of any money I may need prior to [my inauguration on] the 4th of March & I thank you for it. Your letter has made me feel free to tell you if the occasion should arise. But I think I shall be able to get through..."
