FOUR DAYS AFTER THE BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO, THE PROVISIONAL PRESIDENT NAMES AN ACTING SECRETARY OF WAR
An important military letter written immediately after the crucial victory over Santa Anna at San Jacinto: Burnet, provisional President since March, enlists Col. Hall for a key military post: "You are requested to accept the appointment and to perform the duty of Secretary of War pending the absence of Col. T.J. Rusk who is now with the Army. Your acceptance will confer a favor..."
Burnet's letters as Provisional President (his term lasted only seven months) are rare.
