The first carved as a boy happily beating on a drum, an oni mask pushed up on his head, the drum with ebony inlays around the rim and with incised pattern imitating wood, signed Shogetsu between the himotoshi; the second carved as a child crying out in pain as a crab pinches him with its claw, the costume inlaid with coral, mother-of-pearl, and horn and incised, his back pouch inlaid red lacquer, himotoshi on the base with decorative rims, signed Gyokusui on a red lacquer cartouche and with kakihan--1¼ and 1½in. (3 and 3.9cm.) high (2)
