aquatint, 1828, on wove paper, a fine working proof impression of the rare first state (of two), with extensive graphite additions and areas of scratching out by the artist (Delteil records only two impressions in this state including this one, with narrow margins, a few minor foxmarks, minor surface soiling showing only in the blank areas and on the reverse, a few small paper losses at the margin edges, otherwise generally in very good condition

Lot Essay

Delteil records only four impressions of this rare subject, two in each state. It seems unlikely that he saw this impression, which he records, as he makes no metion of the additions. Like his close friend Degas, Alexis Rouart was an enthusiastic collector of the work of Delacroix.
