Lot Essay

This lithograph was produced after the Ingres oil en grisaille of 1824 which was itself a reworking of the Grande odalisque of 1814. In keeping with his maxim "Le dessin est la probité de l'art," the lithograph reinterprets the techniques of drawing whilst retaining the immediacy of effect. The Odalisque was published by Delpech in one of the Albums Lithographiques in 1826. Ingres had returned to France the previous year having been elected a member of the Academy des Beaux-Arts.
