"ONLY DISASTER WILL TEACH, AND THAT, I FEAR IS COMING"

A revealing letter during a difficult time: "Thank you very much for sending me the cigars...Everything is very hard and difficult over here, and the only certainty is that it will get a great deal worse. Only disaster will teach, and that, I fear, is coming. Randolph is with me now...I do not see how I can get across the Atlantic at the present time. I am greatly pressed by my book, and by the other self-exacting work I have to do. In fact I am working as hard as I did during the war, though not, alas, with the same results. I am altogether much stronger and in better health than when I was with you, and I am sure I could swim further from the Swim Club beach. I have very agreeable memories of those days...I am very anxious about things, both here and at home and abroad..."
