Lot Essay

Although Miró first met Josep Llorens Artigas in 1923, the artist and craftsman did not collaborate on ceramics until 1944. In 1951 Artigas purchased the farm and studio "El Reco" in Gallifa, a town set in the rocky landscape north of Barcelona. His association with Miró intensified, resulting in the production of over two hundred ceramics. "Our work sprang directly from the landscape. It became part of it, so that when we put some ceramics out of doors, they immediately became one with nature." (J. Miró in R. Bernier, Miró/Artigas, Torres de grand feu, New York, 1985, n.p.)
