Bred by Mr. Ogilvy in 1766, Trentham was by Sweepstakes, bred by Lord Gower, out of Miss South, by South, bred by Sir John Moore in 1758. The dam of Miss South was by Cartouche out of Ebony, by Flying Childers (see lot 5).
Winner of a number of races in 1769-71, Trentham was sold twice and by 1773, was owned by Mr. Fox and Mr. Foley whose silks appear in this picture. He won numerous races including the Jockey Club Plate at Newmarket in 1775 and was retired to stud in 1777.
