GONE WITH THE WIND, 1939
A watercolor painting by Wilbur Kurtz, noted Southern historian and friend of author Margaret Mitchell. The painting depicts the scene from the film where "Scarlett O'Hara" speaks to a Yankee soldier on the steps of TARA. Mr. Kurtz was hired as a consultant for Gone With The Wind and together with art director Lyle Wheeler helped create the look and feel of the film. The painting is signed in the lower left hand corner Wilbur G. Kurtz '38. Mr. Kurtz's son Henry gave the painting to Harold and Mary Sargent in 1938. In addition to inscribed wedding wishes on the back of the painting, there is an original Atlanta newspaper clipping from 1939 that features the painting and discusses how "...Scarlett O'Hara wedding presents are becoming the vogue amid all the furor over the world premiere of "Gone With The Wind" here December 15."--14¼x 11¾ in.--framed.
