Depicting a Dionysiac procession between eyes, with a satyr riding a mule being lead by a maenad, a dancing satyr in the rear, with additional satyrs on either side of the handle, grape vines in the field, details in added red and white, the eyes with a white irisis and added red pupils, the high ridged handle with knob finial, the ridge terminating with a palmette above the join with the lip, very minor repairs

Lot Essay

Most kyathoi were produced in the workshop of Nikosthenes for export to Etruria. The majority feature Dionysiac subjects, which is quite appropriate as they were used for ladling wine from a krater. Special thanks to Dr. Michael Eisman for the attribution.
