Lot Essay

Wolter made three studies of the small Tuscan town San Gimignano, situated just south of Florence. The towers on the city wall of medieval San Gimignano not only served to defend the inhabitants but were also status symbols. The height of each tower was directly proportionate to the prestige of the family that had build it. Only 13 of these towers have survived to this day. The present painting represents the result of the abovementioned studies.
