Lot Essay

The design of the base of this centrepiece relates to a pair of parcel-gilt silver candlesticks by Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, dated 1825, sold in Christie's Great Rooms by the Trustees of the Knole Estates, 20 May 1987, lot 134.

A centre table with a base of this design, attributed to George J Morant, from the collection of the late Hon. Stephen Tennant was sold by Sotheby's at Wilsford Manor 14-15 October 1987, lot 227. A similar table by Morant, illustrated in The Great Exhibition Catalogue, London 1851, vol. II, pl. 34, p. 745, was designed from a suggestion from the Duchess of Sutherland.
