A black basalt encaustic-decorated teapot and cover
Wedgwood & Bentley, the oval body painted with drapery swags with two pendant medallions, one painted with a winged putto riding a stylised dolphin, holding a crop, the reverse with a putto holding a spear and restraining a hunting hound, within beaded roundels between seeded bands, the flared shaped rim painted with scrolling foliage below a brown line, the handle, spout terminal and flattened cover painted with bands of leaves, with a recumbent lion finial, the interior glazed, impressed lower case mark -- 5 1/8in. (13cm.) high max., circa 1775 (hairline cracks to rim and body, some minute chips to spout)
