Lot Essay

Born in Siberia, Walkowitz studied at the Academy of Art in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris. He participated in the Armory Show in 1913. His favourite subject was the life and architecture of New York. Retrospective exhibitions were held at the Brooklyn Museum in 1939 and the Jewish Museum in 1949. The national museums of Los Angeles, Newark and New York hold many works by Abraham Walkowitz.
