TWO EXPORT SILVER TANKARDS
SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Each of slightly tapering cylindrical shape with dragon handle, the interior lined and gilt-washed, the first with hinged domed cover, decorated in repousse with equestrian warriors, footsoldiers and standard bearers in a landscape, centering a circular cartouche engraved 'FEB 14th 1871' below an obscure logo, the base marked KHC, Khecheong, between pseudo English hallmarks including a sovereign's head, leopard's head crowned and a lion passant, the second with Immortals wandering and resting in a landscape with bamboo, wutong and pine around bridges and shelters, centering a vacant shield, the base marked CHING preceded by obscure characters

Lot Essay

Khecheong operated from Club Street, Honam Island, Canton during the period 1840-1870. Described as 'a very good silversmith', he was one of the most prolific. For other examples of his work, cf.
