A VERY RARE YAOZHOU CELADON CARVED PETAL-MOULDED BOWL
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY

The interior carved in the centre with two dragon carp in mutual pursuit among waves and six ducks swimming among breaking waves around the moulded cavetto, the reverse simply carved with a foliate design, all under a bubble-suffused grey-green glaze

Lot Essay

No other example with this design appears to have been published. Compare the closely related bowls with ducks in the centre surrounded by foliate moulded sides from the Meiyintang Collection illustrated in the Catalogue, Volume One, p. 232, pl. 416 and p. 233, pl. 417; another from the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, Kodansha Series, vol. 5, fig. 77.
