With steep high rounded sides rising from a high foot, the exterior painted with two tiers of lotus petals below simplified breaking waves around the rim, the interior with a continuous lotus meander surrounding a pomegranate spray below key-pattern around the rim

Lot Essay

The present example differs from its otherwise obvious prototype in dividing the exterior lotus petals into two seperate registers. Examples of the early Ming version are illustrated by Joseph, Ming Porcelains, p. 49, fig. 30; and by Pope, Chinese Porcelains in the Ardebil Shrine, pl. 46, no. 29.327 and 29.326.
