A RARE IMPERIAL CINNABAR LACQUER INCENSE STAND

The shaped top with a finely carved flowerhead diaper above borders of key-pattern, ribboned Buddhist Emblems, lotus lappets and a shaped apron delicately carved with pairs of horned five-clawed dragons contesting a central flaming pearl to each side reserved on a dense wave ground, repeated on the floor stretchers, the cabriole legs carved with a sinuous dragon below a larger flaming pearl, the feet wrapped in stylized acanthus leaves resting on ball supports (age cracks, minor chips and restoration)

For the likely Palace context of the present stand, cf. Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, vol.11, Bamboo, Wood, Ivory, Horn, col. pl. 208, where comparable lacquer stands are seen en suite with a throne and screen.
