Lot Essay

No other vase of this unusual design appears to be recorded.

It is rare to find vases with moulded sashes tied around the body. Cf. a blue-ground gilt-decorated vase with a moulded and knotted sash enamelled in pink, sold in these Rooms, 28 April 1997, lot 753, and a related example illustrated in Qing Imperial Porcelain, col. pl. 98. A turquoise-ground famille rose zun vase with a similar pink-enamelled sash tied around the waist from the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, p. 359, col. pl. 40, while a lime-green ground version is illustrated by Liu Liang-yu in Ch'ing Official and Popular Wares, vol. 5, pl. 220.

Compare also with a celadon-glazed baluster vase moulded with a braided ribbon to each face with a bow, sold in these Rooms, 8 October 1990, lot 471. Another in the Baur Collection is illustrated in the revised Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 15, col. pl. 88.
