A RARE LONGQUAN CELADON SQUAT BALUSTER JAR AND COVER, GUAN
YUAN DYNASTY

Heavily potted, the compressed sides moulded with vertical ribs extending from the short neck to the foot with a countersunk base, the domed moulded cover of lotus leaf-form with similar flutes, surmounted by an applied relief stem finial, all under a glaze of characteristic olive-green tone

Lot Essay

Examples of similar Longquan ribbed jars of various sizes were recovered from a ship originally bound for Japan but which sunk in 1330 off the Southwest coast of Korea, are illustrated by Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, London, 1980, pl. 99B, p. 185; others from the collection of the Ottoman sultans are published by Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Tokapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, Catalogue, vol. I, nos. 212 and 213.
