A CARVED IVORY SEAL
QING DYNASTY

The upper half of the oval body deeply carved with four striding dragons chasing and contesting flaming pearls amidst dense clouds above breaking waves, the top with a single dragon surrounding a flaming pearl, the base carved in relief to form a positive seal with four characters reading, Taishang huangdi zhibao, the ivory with a yellowish-cream patina (base age crack)

Lot Essay

The style and treatment of the decoration follows a group of official imperial ivory seals inscribed Tai Shang Huang Di Zhi Bao, the title assumed by the Emperor Qianlong following his abdication on 9th February 1795.
