1940 INDIAN SPORT SCOUT
Frame No. FDO 2201
Black with black leather seat
Engine: V-twin, 45 ci.; Gearbox: 3-speed; Suspension: coil spring girder forks; Brakes: two wheel drum
By the end of the 1920s, Indian, renowned producers of the Scout and Chief models, and synonymous with V-twin engined motorcycles since 1906, was in disarray. To bring costs in line, the popular Scout model, famed mount for many a Wall of Death rider or boy racer, was dropped, but its replacement, the standard Scout, was poorly received and the company felt a need for the sporty Indian-enter the Sport Scout.
With a light single down-tube frame, coil spring girder forks, improved carburretion and alloy cylinder heads, this new model, quickly became a popular choice for production racing and won the first Daytona 200 in 1937. A 45 ci. engine with three speeds, it dispensed with with the old helical gear system in favor of chain primary drive, and in standard form was good for 85mph, or tuned over 100.
This 1940 Sport Scout features solid rear suspension and full fenders being unique to that year's production. The machine has been comprehensively restored by Walkems of Ontario, during which it was set up to run on unleaded fuel. the engine, transmission, clutch, brakes, forks, and fuel tank have all been rebuilt, new drive chain, fenders, wiring harness, instramentation, and lamps are fitted. It is finished in black livery with correct original seal and logo.
Presented in freshly restored order, to original specification and ready to use, this superb Indian is a lovely example of the last of the pre-war models.
