Whilst many lower strength wines can be sensitive to repeated transportation, it is inherent in the nature of Madeira that it actually benefits from it. Indeed, it was the use of Madeira as ballast in the shipment of freight to the West Indies which has developed into the modern process of estufagem in the production of Madeira
