Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Bin-soiled and damaged labels. Lots 13 and 14 levels base of neck. Lot 15 level top-shoulder
At 30 years of age, noted by Sir John as "very good, solid wines, more body than bouquet". That autumn - on October 21 1948 - it was served to the Queen (Elizabeth II) at dinner at Christ's. "My first" he writes "as a (Fellows) steward and all was well". (To this day, our author is on very friendly terms with the Queen Mother).
In fact the '28 Latour was a mammoth wine and, like the 1870 Lafite took fifty years to mature. Alan Sichel, a founder member of the Bordeaux Club was, in the mid 1950s, using it as a house wine, saying that it would never come round in his own lifetime. Alas, he was right. It is perfection now. M.B.
