Level into neck

Cheval-Blanc and Château Margaux were probably the best wines in this somewhat uneven vintage. My notes reveal bottle and bottling variations. Worth pointing out that both these first-growth châteaux shipped in hogshead for bottling by English wine merchants up until the early 1960s.
I have a very good note on the 1950 Cheval-Blanc, a magnum from Jack Plumb's cellar, but failed to record the bottler: it must have been bottled by Harveys, as these magnums are from the same bin. Served at his Bordeaux Club dinner at Christie's in November 1995, unusually to which wives were invited, the wine was showing age on the nose but was surprisingly powerful with good flavour and texture. I gave it ****. M.B.
