No less than fifteen nineteenth-century vintages, opening with the legendary 1847
Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1847

Re-corked by the Château in 1993. New label. Level into neck
The greatest 19th century vintage of Yquem and probably the greatest of all time and certainly made famous by a Russian Grand Duke who paid an astounding sum for a barrel bottled in gold-engraved crystal decanters. I have been privileged to taste (sip-one does not spit out Yquem, no matter what the vintage) the 1847 Yquem on half a dozen occasions. With one exception - a poor cork - they were exceptionally concentrated, the wine a fairly deep amber in colour with an astonishingly powerful bouquet, vanilla, raisiny, peaches and cream - of course words cannot do justice. On the palate still very sweet, full, rich, intense, with great length. Last tasted September 1995. MB
