Lot Essay

These tables, with flowered mosaic tops wreathed by acanthus-wrapped ribbons, moulded frieze frames and serpentine legs terminating in scrolled feet, relate to a pair of pier tables displayed in the Sketch Gallery at Chatsworth, Derbyshire, that are likely to to have been supplied by James Moore (d.1726), cabinet maker to George I (see The Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth, 1995, p.28). Their ornament of broad antique stippled ribbons, aswell as the rare detail of foliage running up rather than down the legs, can be found on a stand-supported chest that has also been attributed to Moore and is at Boughton House, Northamptonshire (see I. Caldweel "James Moore and the Bateman Chest", Antique Collector, February 1988, p.76).
The same patterned frame, supporting a cormandel lacquer top features on another table from Luton Hoo, offered as lot 191 in this sale.
