Lot Essay

Le Breton, a Naval Surgeon on Dumont d'Urville's Astrolabe and artist to the expedition after Goupil's death in 1840, served on the Berceau in the Indian Ocean in 1844-5 and transferred to the Department of Maps and Charts in Paris in 1848, working as an illustrator and lithographer until his death in August 1866.
