A CHINESE FRAGMENT
First Quarter 19th Century
Having camel lotus blossoms and vinery overall on an indigo field, made into a saddle rug
Approximately 4ft. 6in. x 1ft. 8in. (137cm. x 51cm.)

Lot Essay

Warp: cotton, white, natural,Z3 or 4S
Weft: cotton, greyish, natural, Z2 or 3S, 2 shoots alternating
Pile: wool, Z4 to 6, or 2xZ4, asymmetric, open left, no warp depression, H9 x V9
Sides: center seam retains original selvage: 2 bundles of 2 body warps wrapped in greyish cotton sewn together
Ends: cut, entire periphery covered in velvet edging
Colors: dark blue, old gold (eroded)

The design of this piece is loosely based on Song and Ming silk brocade textile designs of scrolling lotus blossoms.
