cover 1851 (6 Jan.) entire letter from Richard Greetham (apparently on the run, and in hiding on the Isle of Man) at Castletown, addressed to himself at Carlisle but with cyptic addition "for SW" to the address, clearly intended for his wife the letter begins "Dear Sarah" and tells of his solitude, clearly homesick and missing his children, obviously fearing for his safety he has chosen his hiding place carefully "if it was Summer I could fish for Salmon, Trout and Eels without moving ...... and nobody can come in or out of the farm without me seeing them", the adhesive, an 1841 1d., having been partly affixed with sealing wax was then sewn onto the cover with needle and thread (possibly either it had got wet and lost its gum or, given surface marks clear of the "407" numerals, may well have been previously used), the reverse with Douglas (in green) and Castletown (in blue) datestamps; a fascinating item.
