In the exhibition catalogue for the Dundee Art Gallery and Museums touring exhibition (lot. cit) the artist recalls "I remember doing a series of watercolours for a friend in Dundee which were all in the style of Herald or Melville, all very blotchy and impressionistic. Haswell Miller saw them and said they were OK, very clever and what have you, but they weren't really very good "Look here," he said to me, "if the art of watercolour painting could be divided into twenty-four parts, then you have learned the first four and the last four, but the stuff in between is still very important.
