Lot Essay

This much modified revolver has been designed specifically for 'Fast Draw and Shoot' and aerial shooting exercises, the stocks allowing for use with either hand, the cut-away triggerguard promoting swift access to the trigger. Lent to Ian Fleming at the same time as the Walther PPK,(Lot 3), it was the source of inspiration for the cover of 'From Russia, With Love', which was painted by the artist Richard Chopping; he had been commissioned by Ian Fleming to paint the pistol entwined with a rose. Fleming briefly equipped James Bond with a Smith & Wesson revolver in 'Dr No', but it was not to remain a permanent feature in the Bond tradition
