Each with a back-scrolled toprail enriched with patera, above a buttoned padded back and drop-in seat covered in dark-blue leather with downsept sides, above an oval-panelled seatrail, on ring-turned fluted baluster legs, brass caps and castors, each with printed paper label (one partially missing) printed 'C. HINDLEY & SONS, CARPET MANUFACTURERS CABINET MAKERS & UPSHOLSTERERS 31 & 32, Berners St. Oxford St. LONDON' and inscribed in ink '2142', one upright cracked, one foot spliced (2)

Lot Essay

Charles Hindley and Sons were carpet, rug and floor cloth manufacturers before acquiring the cabinet-makers Miles and Edwards in 1844. Thereafter, they produced furniture and traded from Miles and Edwards' old premises at 134 Oxford Street (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 34).
