Lot Essay

Robert Brettel Bate was a mathematical instrument-maker and a member of the Clockmakers' Company. His business was in Cheapside, London, where he was active between 1807 and 1849, (E. Banfield, Barometers Stick or Cistern Tube, Trowbridge, 1985, p. 121).
