"With every photo of a family, the relationships interest me in two respects. First the relationships of people, who at that moment live in these places, with their own history. And also in the way that the pictures can go beyond that and give examples of particular way of life... I think that the question of whether a portrait is possible has quite a bit to do with whether one grants a photograph at all the capacity to generate a form of truth in representation."
