Lot Essay

"The new statue, as it might now be proposed in Balkenhol's work, is rarely nude, and it carries no attributes of occupation, labour or engagement. It develops as an incompletely particularized human figure, neither wholly shruken into meagre individuality and solitude, nor a transcendent "Denkmodell", either classicistic or neo-expressionist. It is, strictly speaking, a monad: an isolated, condensed being, sharing some of the romantic symbolism connected to the image of the solitary tree out of which it is carved." (Jeff Wall, "An Outline of a Context for Stephan Balkenhol's Work", London 1988, p. 101.)
