Lot Essay

Franz Radziwill started painting in 1919 when he returned to Bremen from the front at the age of twenty-four. In 1920, the self-taught artist became the youngest painter to exhibit at the Berliner Sezession and the following year he moved to Dangast. He would later note: "Kein Bild von mir ist ohne Dangast möglich", emphasizing in this way the enormous influence that the town had upon his work and life.
