GOBIEN, Charles de. Histoire des Isles Marianes, Paris: Nicolas Pepie, 1700.
12°, half title, errata leaf at end, 2 folding engraved maps, one of the Marianas, the other of Guam (occasional light browning), contemporary French speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments (extremities rubbed, tail of spine chipped). Provenance: Mr. Saulot de Bospin, bookplate.
A GOOD COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. The Jesuit mission to the Marianas group, then under nominal Spanish domination, was set up by Diego Luis de Sanvitores. The present work came to be seen as an important authority on the area largely due to the access Le Gobien, who as secretary to the French Jesuit missions had first hand reports from the various missions. Palau 134431.
