Lot bbb: mid-upper shoulder levels; verly lightly dampstained labels; bottles embossed "Lafite Grand Vin; Cruse Fils labels, capsules, and remnants of wire mesh
Note: Lot bbb purchased by the late husband of the consignor at the 11th Hublein Premiere National Auction of Rare Wines, May 24, 1979, Chicago, lots 371 and 372
These bottles were removed in 1977 by Hublein from the cellar of the Ten Broeck mansion in Albany, New York, following the re-discovery of the wine cellar in the house. Removed from original wooden cases labelled "purchased 1879," these wines- along with dozens of other fine pre-phylloxera wines- had lain undisturbed for almost 100 years. Tasting notes from Hublein's sale catalog report "amazingly intense and complex developed nose; great depth of flavor, rich bodied and sweet, big, full; dark depth of garnet color; beautifully harmoniuos strong developed claret bouquet- vigorous; mouthfilling body and complex taste full of tannin- buttressed sweetness- hard shell but tender center; lingering shapely profile, structured, majestic!"
