Lot Essay

James, Earl of Lonsdale (b. 1736) succeeded his cousin Viscount Lonsdale in the Baronetcy and was created 24 May 1784, Baron Lowther of Lowther, Baron Kendal, Baron Burgh, Viscount Lonsdale, Viscount Lowther and Earl of Lonsdale. He married Mary, daughter of John, Earl of Bute in 1761 but having no issue, he obtained a new patent in 1797 creating him Baron and Viscount Lowther with remainder to his male heirs of his cousin, Rev. Sir William Lowther, Bt.
