Lot Essay

Max Friedlnder, who saw the present painting when it was with Nebehay in Berlin, compares it to a Crucifixion in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (Inv. no. A859, op. cit., pl. 72). W. Gibson, in his doctoral dissertation, considered it to be a workshop piece, having only seen the painting in a photograph.
