Lot Essay

A specialist in military subjects and hunting scenes, Reder, who was born in Leipzig, left for Venice at an early age and stayed there until he was twenty-five. In 1686 he moved to Rome where he worked in the Palazzo Caetani (now the Palazzo Ruspoli) and painted four (lost) landscape frescoes. Although not many works on canvas are known by this artist, the present lot can be compared to landscapes by him in the Sacra Congregazione de Propaganda Fide, Rome (including Inv. nos. 61 and 62) which Busiri Vici believed to be early collaborative works by Jan Frans and Pieter van Bloemen (see A. Busiri Vici, Orrizonte, 1974, nos. 2-7, Inv. nos. 58-63; and L. Salerno, Pittori de Paesaggio del Seicento a Roma, II, pp. 860-3, nos. 158.2 and 158.3). Salerno notes a further work by Reder in the Galleria Spada.
