Saint Isodore (c.1080-c.1130), born near Madrid, was forced to flee the region before the advancing Saracens, and worked as a farm laborer until he became the steward to John of Varges. Other laborers became jealous of him and accused him of neglecting his work in favour of pious deeds. As a result, Varges spied on him and caught him at prayer while two angels harnessed to the plough worked in his place, whereupon he was immediately converted to Christianity. Isodore's cult reached Brittany, Franche-Comt and the Tyrol and He is the patron saint of Madrid.
